The Harpoon is a subsonic anti-ship cruise missile designed to target surfaced submarines, but it has also been used effectively against surface vessels. The missile has a range of 90 to 240 km and can be launched from fixed-wing aircraft, surface ships, and submarines. In 1988, Harpoon missiles were used by the U.S. to sink the Iranian frigate Sahand during Operation Praying Mantis.
The Harpoon uses a semi-armor piercing warhead capable of 2-4 inches of armor penetration. However, the penetration of a shaped charge is approximately six times its diameter, which means that a small anti-ship missile like the Harpoon can penetrate 54-72 inches of armor. The real damage in a missile hit is often caused by the fire ignited by the fuel sprayed around upon impact.
