Abrar-ul-Haq: From Music Icon to Philanthropist & Former Politician

Abrar-ul-Haq is a celebrated Pakistani singer, songwriter, philanthropist, and former politician who rose to fame in the mid-1990s and became one of the most influential figures in the country’s pop and bhangra music industry. His debut album Billo De Ghar (1995) achieved massive global success, reportedly selling millions of copies worldwide, and established him as a cultural icon often referred to as the “King of Pakistani pop and bhangra.”

Born in Faisalabad, Punjab, Abrar-ul-Haq belongs to a Punjabi Jat family of the Kahlon clan. He is the youngest of eight siblings and comes from a civil servant family background. He completed his early education in Gujrat and later studied at Sir Syed College, Rawalpindi. He went on to earn a Master’s degree in Social Sciences from Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad. Before pursuing music full-time, he also worked briefly as a teacher at Aitchison College, Lahore.

Abrar-ul-Haq’s music career began with the release of Billo De Ghar, which became an instant hit and marked the beginning of a highly successful musical journey. He went on to release several popular albums, including Majajani, Nach Punjaban, and Nara Sada Ishq Aye, earning widespread popularity across Pakistan and among international South Asian audiences. However, his music also faced multiple controversies over lyrical content, leading to bans, re-recordings, and even legal challenges in different periods.

Alongside his music career, Abrar-ul-Haq has been deeply involved in humanitarian work. He founded the Sahara for Life Trust in 1998, a non-profit organization focused on healthcare and education in underserved areas of Pakistan. The organization established a major hospital in Narowal, significantly improving access to medical facilities in remote regions and contributing to lifesaving healthcare services. He has also been associated with other social initiatives, including disability support programs and global goodwill ambassador roles.

In politics, Abrar-ul-Haq joined Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in 2011 and served in several leadership positions, including youth and foreign affairs roles within the party. He contested National Assembly seats in 2013 and 2018 but was unsuccessful in both elections. In 2019, he was appointed Chairman of the Pakistan Red Crescent Society, a position he held until his departure from politics in 2023 following the May 9 unrest-related developments.

Over the years, Abrar-ul-Haq has received multiple national honors, including Tamgha-e-Imtiaz and Sitara-e-Eisaar, recognizing his contributions to music and humanitarian services. He remains an influential public figure in Pakistan, known for his contributions to entertainment, social welfare, and public service.
