In this interview, we speak with Elaine Mardis, the co-executive director of the Institute for Genomic Medicine at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, and a professor of pediatrics at Ohio State University's College of Medicine. Mardis, along with Rick Wilson, also now at Nationwide Children's, ran the McDonnell Genome Institute at Washington University St. Louis, one of the original genome centers in the US. In 2008, their team was the first to sequence the genomes of tumor and normal cells from a woman with acute myeloid leukemia. They found 10 genes with acquired mutations, paving the way for efforts like The Cancer Genome Atlas. Upon moving to Nationwide Children's in 2016, Mardis and Wilson set up a sequencing pipeline to inform the clinical care of pediatric cancer patients.
