On the cross, Christ cried, “Eloi, Eloi,” My God, My God. The crowd heard “Elijah” and waited for a prophet to appear. They interpreted divine mystery through their own expectations and missed the moment entirely.

The young monk Nicetas made the same error. He entered solitude before he was ready. A vision came to him, glowing, radiant, and angelic. He believed this was divine communion. The elders warned him. He refused to listen. What he believed to be God was actually the devil disguised as light.

This behavior is prelest; it's a spiritual delusion born from trusting your own interpretation over the guidance of those who have walked before you.

You think you recognize God’s voice.
You think you discern His presence.

But the devil doesn't announce himself. He arrives as light, and he confirms what you already want to believe. The danger is that you won't notice until it's too late. The rational mind can't save you. You can't trust your spiritual experiences without submission to tradition and humility.

Stop thinking.
Stop analyzing.
Be still and know.
