Trauma And Silence In Migration: Lessons For Politics, The Media, And The General Public

Migrants have regarded literature as a means to make themselves heard in debates about migration for a long time. Trauma and the resulting silence have been a central element of their writing. In my talk, I will present selected works by Vladimir Vertlib and Julya Rabinowich to explain their take on trauma, silence, and migration and discuss the lessons politics, the media, and the general public can learn from their writings

About the speaker:
Wiebke Sievers is a migration researcher at the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna and a guest researcher and lecturer at the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt/Oder. She is chair of the board of directors of the biggest European research network on migration, IMISCOE. Together with Marco Martiniello, she coordinates the IMISCOE Standing Committee Superdiversity, Migration, and Cultural Change (DIVCULT).

About the project - IDENTITY ON THE LINE

Identity on the Line (I-ON) is a large-scale cooperation project, co-funded by the European Union and conducted by six cultural history museums and one university from seven European countries.

It aims to explore the long-term consequences of migratory movements on the identity-building process of the people involved and of their children and grandchildren. The project focused on collecting, analyzing, and showcasing experiences from specific migratory processes over the last 100 years in Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Poland, Lithuania, Slovenia, and Croatia.
The main findings are now summarized in a package of materials for educational and cultural institutions, as well as the general public, through physical and digital exhibitions, movies, publications, and school packages – and now also a series of recommendations for policymakers.
