Join award-winning book designer Mark Murphy on an outdoor hiking adventure to an ancient civilization in the Arizona desert in the Great Bend of the Gila National Monument, initially inhabited by the ancestral Hohokam dating back to 3,000 BC.
The Great Bend of the Gila, located in Arizona’s Sonoran Desert and covering more than 375,000 acres, is a site of immense historical importance. The National Trust for Historic Preservation considers it one of the most significant cultural sites in the Southwest and reveres it as sacred native land.
The Bureau of Land Management is the steward over this invaluable national monument, once occupied by ancestral Hohokam and Patayan cultures, and is responsible for aqueducts, ball courts, petroglyphs, and geoglyphs along three major historic trails.
Hundreds of petroglyphs are on the volcanic basalt outcrops next to the Gila River. The area is believed to have been utilized for thousands of years, from A.D. 500 until the 1800s. Many archaeological remains left by prehistoric peoples are visible, but petroglyphs are the most predominant.
