A coalition of six local organizations from Chokpot, South Garo Hills, Meghalaya, has forcefully condemned illegal limestone mining at Asakgre Emandura Banda village, demanding an immediate cessation of the activity and legal action against the perpetrators. The groups, which include the GSU and CAVC, conducted a site inspection on October 23, 2025, confirming that drilling and extraction were occurring without necessary permissions from the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), Civil SDO, or Deputy Commissioner, in violation of the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, despite the A·khing Nokma only granting a survey NOC. They warn that the unauthorized mining, which comes shortly after an illegal coal controversy, is causing irreversible environmental damage and endangering local livelihoods, and are appealing to the state and district authorities to intervene to protect the region's rich ecology and the rights of indigenous people.
