After "The Last Temptation of Christ" was canceled by Paramount Pictures at the last minute, Martin Scorsese re-discovered his passion for filmmaking with the independently produced "After Hours." He used his technical expertise to turn a script by a recent NYU graduate & first time-screenwriter into a high-style tour de force.
The experience was the beginning of the second phase of his career which produces such classics as "Goodfellas" and "Casino." Not so well known about the film, is that the screenwriter, Joe Minion, had actually stolen the idea from a Joe Frank radio play titled, “Lies." Frank sued the producer and was paid as part of the settlement. It doesn't diminish the power of the film itself -- only the reputation of Minion.
"After Hours" is a great film that has stood the test of time because of its great cast, superb technicality and pure cinematic style. Scorsese himself says it is the only one of his movies that he can re-watch again and again.
