Emma Spencer is a former ballerina with the Rockbridge Ballet and a recent graduate of Elon University. She is pursuing a career in graphic design with a clothing company called Tuckernuck in Washington D.C. The communications field, art, and design have always intrigued her because they allow her to tell a story.
Ballet Mistress Meagan Herald investigated Emma’s impetus for creating her work. Octopi are well known for their ability to adapt and outsmart those who study them. With that playful spirit, she could not resist attempting to capture the graceful unique movements of an octopus through dance. When she learned more about this art piece and the potential impact farming octopi would have on the social behaviors of the octopi and the environment, Meagan decided to pair the dancers in such a way that collectively the dancers blend together; however, each grouping has its own identity which is lost when the dancers return to the collective.
