President Richard Nixon talks with his former rival Hubert Humphrey on election night 1972. The two men, who ran against each other the previous presidential election in 1968, refer to each other as friends. They discuss Nixons current challenger George McGovern, and Humphrey explains why he felt he had to support McGovern publicly. Nixon believes that he has a peace agreement in Vietnam wrapped up, and he had Henry Kissinger call Humphrey to discuss this with him. They also discuss Humphrey's son and the state of the election results in Humphreys home state of Minnesota. Humphrey thanks Nixon for a letter of encouragement that Nixon wrote to him after he lost the Democratic primaries to McGovern earlier that year. Nixon closes by citing the example of Winston Churchill to tell Humphrey that he may yet have a chance at the presidency sometime in the future.
