Pharmacokinetics is the activity or movement of drugs into the body over a period of time, it includes the processes by which drugs are absorbed, distributed, metabolized and then excreted by the body either through the feces or urine. In short, all those processing that the drug undergoes once it enters in to the body is termed pharmakokinetics. Pharmakokinetics can be remembered with the help of the pneumonic ADME.

In today’s video we’ll look into the drug absorption with respect to the gastrointestinal tract.

Drug Absorption:
Drug absorption is the transfer of a drug from the site of administration (mainly the GITract here) into the blood stream. The rate and extent at which drugs are absorbed depends on the environment where from the drug is absorbed such as the pH, the chemical characteristics of the drug itself, and then the route of administration of a drug through which we can estimate the bioavailability of a drug as well. Drugs can be absorbed from the GI tract by four mechanisms listed as passive diffusion, facilitated diffusion, active transport and endocytosis.
For descriptive purpose Let’s zoom in to a small part of the GI tract and then further zoom in to a part of the cell membrane of an individual cell and look into all 4 mechanisms of drug absorption from the GIT.
