Schools waste A LOT of food in the lunchroom every day. It's a big problem.
By sorting waste into recovered food, liquids, recycling, landfill trash, and food scraps, Birchwood Middle School in North Providence, Rhode Island has cut lunchroom waste drastically. On one day, they calculated that they had cut landfill trash from 107 lbs. per day to under 10 lbs. That's a 90% reduction!
So it follows that cities should pay lower hauling fees for schools that sort their trash. It's a win for the environment, a win for education, and a win for cash-strapped school districts.
