This is the fourth of four videos on the case study of London, the other three parts are linked in the description.

In 2012, the UK hosted the Olympics in East London, in an area now known as Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. This area is in 4 boroughs: Newham, Tower Hamlets, Hackney and Waltham Forest.

Before the Olympics, there were many abandoned industrial buildings and sites, high unemployment, poor life expectancy and lower than average household income and achievement at school in the area. In other words, it desperately needed regeneration - and this is what the Olympics aimed to do.

The project had many positives:
» The Olympics brought more than £9bn of investment to London, much of which went into the transport sector
» The Athletes Village was converted into a residential area known as East Village after the Olympics, providing 2,800 new houses.
» A shortage of school places was helped by the opening of a new school covering all levels of education
» Unemployment fell across London
» Rail infrastructure in the area was improved which has helped Stratford to become one of the best connected parts of London - its Underground station is the 6th busiest station in the country.
» The Olympic Site was mainly built on 560 acres of brownfield land.
» The water quality of the River Lea has improved as a result and new green spaces and wildlife habitats were created including ponds and woodlands.
» Sustainable and biodiverse vegetation was chosen for the area including 70,000 plants from 250 different species, 4,000 trees and 300,000 wetland plants.
» The stadiums were also made of at least 25% recycled materials

However, there were also some negatives of the project:
» The Olympics was £5bn over budget, costing £8.77bn
» The Olympic Stadium was also over budget, costing £700 million, 3x the original estimate.
» 40% of the new homes were supposed to be affordable however Anne Power at the London School of Economics said these rents “will be unaffordable to Newham’s poorest households.”
» Many cheaper homes were demolished to build the new estate too.
» Despite many job opportunities being provided, few jobs were created for locals and the unemployment rate increased in Tower Hamlets during the Olympics.
» Rents have also risen due to the Olympics and many people surrounding the Olympic Park are still in poverty
» Existing businesses were also forced to move out of the area, such as H. Forman & Sons, a salmon-smoking factory who had 50 employees
» Wildlife was also forced to relocate, with 4,000 smooth newts, 300 lizards, 100 toads and many fish being moved elsewhere.
» Many of the building materials for the Park came from other countries and the Olympics produced a total of 3.3 million tons of CO2.
