Hick's Law | UX Design Tips

Описание: Imagine you are in a fancy restaurant and there is a long menu in front of you. Everything looks delicious and affordable. As you rack your brain trying to make a decision, your friend sitting next to you ordered a medium-rare steak in 2 seconds, reliving himself the pain of information saturation.

This, my friend, is the Hick-Hyman law. In 1951, William Edmund Hick discovered that the more choices a man faces, the more time he will take to decide. The design community has widely adopted it as one of the most critical guiding principles when creating a smooth user experience. Let’s take a look at facebook’s login page.

The most striking feature of that page is the credential box, where you put your username and password, it is followed by a green “create a new account” button for those of you who, surprisingly, don’t have a Facebook account in 2021.

All other options, including Oculus, Marketplace, and Voting information Centre, are crammed to the button of the page since only a tiny percentage of users would actually look for them in real life.

A design system like this creates priorities, reminding users of the most important thing when using Facebook. If you use Hick’s law in your design, remember to pick out essential items and prioritize them in an interface.

Only leave a reasonable amount of choices on your page so you can relieve the burden of choice from your users.
