The Hooper Pile-X-550C is a specialist digger mounted pile driver that will work with any excavator. It is very simple to attach and operate. The pile driver only requires a hydraulic circuit at the end of the boom and a 12V electrical supply, normally using the cigarette lighter socket. The hydraulic circuit is normally used for a thumb or bucket swivel, which are not needed when using the pile driver.
A dedicated wiring loom has a control box by the digger operator and it runs along the boom to the Pile-X-550C. The rise and fall of the block is triggered by a button on the control box, and the rest of the movements are controlled by the normal digger controls. A minimum digger size of 6 tonne is required and may need to be bigger in some conditions.
The Pile-X-550C has a 5 metre mast and a 500KG block. This sizes suit a wide range of tasks and are a common design from Civil Engineers when specifying the required set of the piles. It is now common for civil engineers to request Contractors use a falling weight from a pile driver to measure the set of the pile. The final set and temporary compression (also known as the elastic rebound) of pile and soil of a driven pile is often measured by dropping weight of a known heaviness a specific distance, and measuring how far the pile goes into the ground for that one impact. An example would be a 500KG block on a pile driver falling 2 metres. The engineer may say that with one strike the pile can move no more than 10mm. What we are calling a block is also known as a hammer or monkey. Measurement of temporary compression (TC) is important for pile capacity evaluation.
Vibrating plate pile drivers are quite common, however they cannot be used to measure the set specified by the engineer. This is where falling block pile drivers become necessary.
