This is the first installment in a series on gardening on the homestead. This week we will be talking about our raised beds.
Our beds are 4 feet by 12 feet and are constructed of pressure treated 2X6's. There are a number of reasons why we went with raised beds as opposed to other gardening methods:
Focused watering in our dry climate
Focused soil improvement
Soil warms up earlier in the spring for planting sooner
Less work leveling the ground
Even with the upfront cost of the raised beds, in the long run they will pay off by allowing us to actually get a larger harvest.
