Описание: It used to be taboo, but the number of newlywed interracial couples has more than doubled in the last thirty years. And you may be surprised to hear that the South ranks second in the nation for the number of interracial marriages.

A study released by the Pew Research Center reports that the number of new marriages between interracial couples increased to about 15 percent in 2010. And the number of all current marriages that are interracial or interethnic is at at an all time high at just over 8 percent.

"I mean I can't say I'm suprised. Even the concept of racist self is flawed. Because we're just one species, and just because we come from different parts of the world and have different genetic indicators doesn't mean that we're a different race." Gi Jeong said, who is in an interracial couple.

The number of newlywed interracial couples differs by regions throughout the US with the West having the most with just over 20 percent. And in second place, the South at 14 percent.

The study shows that couples formed of an Asian male and white female are the top combined income earners. White males who married a Black, Hispanic or Asian spouse had higher earnings than those who married a white spouse. White females who married a Black or Hispanic spouse had lower earnings than those who married a white or Asian spouse. The study also shows more than fourty percent of Americans think these changes are good for society.

"The biggest thing I've faced is that guys, white men actually, are just like, I can take her from him because he's Asian." Kelley Vann said, who is also in an interracial couple.

In 1986 only one third of the public saw intermarriage as acceptable for everyone. The report also shows that divorce rates are higher for interracial couples. But these numbers vary by the racial and gender characteristics of the couple.
