Tarapith is closely associated with the goddess Maa Tara, a fierce form of Shakti and one of the 10 Mahavidyas. Tarapith is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, where the third eye (Tara) of Goddess Sati’s body fell during Lord Shiva’s tandava (dance of destruction), giving the place its name—Tarapith. This place is also associated with Saadhak Bamakhepa. The tomb of Bamakhepa, located near the temple, is a major pilgrimage spot.
Another significant yet less explored site nearby is Choto Babar Ashram and Mundamalini Tala, a sacred cremation ground where tantric rituals are performed.
