Starmer under pressure after major election losses

Their historic citadels overrun by Reform UK, the Greens and Plaid Cymru, their attempts to take on the SNP a miserable failure.

Labour MPs, when they gather in parliament next week, must now work out whether this was the kind of election result that merely buffets a prime minister under pressure, or the kind that means politics will never be the same again. They must decide Keir Starmer's future.

There are a few calls for him to go - but not yet, with many privately hoping he'll announce a timetable to quit to give them time to work out who and what next.

Tonight, our politics is in flux, with no certainty when or how things will land.
