Both Buddy Ebsen and Nancy Kulp were naval officers long before taking their respective roles on The Beverly Hillbillies. By the time they were cast on the show, both figures had become incredibly outspoken politically. Whereas Buddy was a conservative Republican, Nancy was a liberal Democrat. Over the course of the show’s production, the two got into numerous arguments. According to their fellow members of the cast and crew, these arguments typically started out as cordial before devolving into screaming matches. After nine seasons of filming the show, the two stars were likely glad not to have to be around each other.

The Beverly Hillbillies came to an end in the 1970s. Around a decade later, Nancy Kulp decided to end her acting career and make a bid to become a Pennsylvania congresswoman. Though Buddy wasn’t a resident of the state, he found himself wanting to take a stand when he heard about his former costars plans. Buddy was a resident of California, but he offered his services to record some advertising campaigns for incumbent Republican congressman E.G. Shuster.
