For those of you who don't want to sit through a 10 minute fully narrated video, here's a quick 3 minute demonstration of a Tandberg model 64. Play, rewind, wind, pause, record, speed change are all demonstrated. Note that the machine has no integral speakers or power amplifier, the sound heard in the video is produced by an external amplifier and speakers.
The Tandberg 64 was introduced in 1960 and was an early upmarket four-track tape deck. Being intended primarily for the discerning user, it found its way into semi-professional installations as well, as it sported separate record and playback heads (i.e. a total of three heads in all including the erase head), accompanying separate record and playback amplifiers, completely based on triode tubes for low noise, as well as a synchronous motor for maximum speed accuracy. It supports three speeds, 7 1/2, 3 3/4 and 1 7/8 inches per second.
