So here is my Christmas MEP part for the amazing CrepuscularMEPs!
Go subscribe if you haven't already, they post such amazing MEPs that I don't think you would want to miss out on!
So.. for the reason I asked you to read the description:
I don't usually get involved with things like these, and stick to just editing on here, but just this once, specially considering the video, I wanted to share a message:
If you are planning on buying an animal as a present for someone this year, please don't. Around 50% (researched, not taken out of my ass) of all holiday pet gifts end up at shelters, and here's why:
1. ANIMALS ARE NOT GIFTS
Animals are breathing, feeling, living beings that require a lot of responsibility and love. Not everyone is ready to get and take care of an animal. It really doesn't matter how well you know someone here, you can never know exactly how a person feels about a sudden and new HUGE responsibility falling into their laps.
2. BUT YLVA, I KNOW THEY WANT A PET!
If they want a pet, but haven't gotten one yet, the reason might just be that they're not ready. They might be saving money, researching what pet they should get, etc. etc. It is not up to YOU when they get an animal. Even if you know they are ready, have everything prepared, etc. you are essentially robbing them of the opportunity to pick out their own best friend. Animals aren't things, they're being with a lot of personality and spark. And just like you wouldn't make friends with just any stranger on the street, not all animals are suited to you. Let the person find their own little buddy!
3. WHAT IF IT'S A GIFT FOR MY CHILD?
There are plenty of positive reasons why growing up with an animal is a great thing to do, but if you as a parent decide to get your children an animal, you need to understand this: YOU will be responsible for the animal, the children won't. If you are going to get an animal, just to get rid of it again when your kids stop taking it for walks or cleaning the kitty litter, etc. (which they most likely will), then you just shouldn't get them a pet. It shouldn't be the animal's problem that your children doesn't think it's fun anymore.
I KNOW you might think that the person you are gifting an animal to will be responsible and caring etc. and won't leave it at a shelter. But keep in mind that EVERYONE thinks that when they gift a pet, and 50% of them are wrong.
Last note: If you knew a couple who wanted to adopt, you wouldn't just show up at their door with a baby on Christmas going: "Here you go! :D" Animals are living beings, not toys to be given away lightly.
