I do love the sound of a good FM synth pad (and I hope that you do too!!!)
I have recently purchased a Korg Volca FM2 desktop synth to partner with the NDLR. The recent mark 2 update to the Volca FM adds more voices to the original - six instead of the earlier models' three, and a host of other updates to the FM algorithms.
I've also been delving into writing code for the littleBits Arduino bit (a Leonardo / ATMEGA 32W4 chipset) so it can act as a USB-over-MIDI device. This communicates with the NDLR via a USB host module. Every push on the button sends a NoteOn/Off event to randomly select on of the seven Chord Degrees on the NDLR and also to randomise CV into the littleBits Synth filter cutoff.
The Volca FM2 is configured to respond to MIDI messages sent from the Pad part on the NDLR. During the performance I am controlling the Pad Spread and Range via CC messages derived from the potentiometer settings on the littleBits, and Chord Type via the NDLR front-panel controls. There is also some subtle modulation of the Pad Position via the Mod Matrix.
