In this video, I unpack the psychological and philosophical architecture of Midnight Mass, created by Mike Flanagan.
Rather than asking whether faith is right or wrong, this piece looks at what faith does.
Faith in Midnight Mass functions as a psychological buffer — a way to survive grief, guilt, addiction, and existential terror. It lowers the emotional activation energy required for forgiveness, endurance, and meaning-making. In that sense, faith is not framed as delusion, but as an adaptive tool.
But the series is also precise about the danger.
The same mechanism that helps people survive reality can, when unchecked, begin to overwrite it. When faith bypasses consent, sanctifies harm, or rewrite limits, it stops buffering suffering and starts managing people. What begins as comfort becomes control. What begins as meaning becomes power.
This video draws from psychology, philosophy, and narrative analysis to explore how belief systems shape behavior — and how easily care can turn into coercion when wisdom is lost.
This is not a critique of religion.
It’s an examination of how belief operates on the human mind.
