South Korea has proposed military talks with North Korea to resolve the dispute over their land border as part of efforts to ease the risk of accidental clashes.
Our Kim Do-yeon explains.

Following North Korea's mine provocation on September 21, South Korea's military wants to sit down with its northern counterpart to pin down the exact location of the border, before more clashes happen.
With no means of communicating with the North, the Defense Ministry made the offer through the press on Friday.

"Our defense ministry formally proposes military talks with the North to confirm the exact location of the ground demarcation line, and to discuss restoring military communication lines and preventing accidental clashes. If necessary, three-way talks including the United Nations Command are also possible.

The ministry says the two sides still disagree on where parts of the Military Demarcation Line run.
When the armistice was signed in 1953, 1,292 markers were placed along the line. Only about 200 remain.
South Korea uses a 2004 U.S. military map, the United Nations Command uses its own 2016 coordinates, and the North is believed to use a third line drawn from the remaining markers.
North Korea keeps building barriers and laying mines near the line, so tensions could rise further as South Korean troops fire warning shots when they see North Korean soldiers crossing the line.
Seoul proposed talks on the issue last November, but Pyongyang has not responded.
This time, the proposal comes after the military's investigation found that the September 21 blast, which injured South Korean soldiers, was caused by a North Korean mine.
Pyongyang denies responsibility and calls the incident a fabrication.
The military also told the National Assembly on Friday that North Korea has laid around 960,000 mines since 2024.

"If this situation continues to be neglected, it is difficult to predict what else may happen. The expected damage will not be limited to one side."

The proposal also comes as North Korea keeps sending hostile messages toward Seoul.
Kim Yo-jong, the sister of leader Kim Jong-un, has threatened to activate loudspeakers against the South along the entire border by the end of October.

Seoul says it is not ruling out a proportional response.
