The command of the Home Army in the Old Town, in consultation with the commander of the Warsaw District of the Home Army, Colonel Antoni Chruściel a.k.a. Monter, finally decides to evacuate the defenders of the Old Town to Srodmiescie.
In the evening, the insurgent units regroup and prepare to break through along Bielanska Street towards Mirowska Hall and Za Zelazna Brama Square.
Downtown remains under heavy enemy artillery and aviation fire. The situation is similar in Mokotow, where bombs destroy buildings on Raclawicka, Okulska, Balucki and Kazimierzowska Streets. A hospital on Chelmska Street goes up in flames. Airplanes circling over Sadyba herald a new enemy attack.
The population of Warsaw is exhausted by the ongoing uprising. News from the West brings encouragement. The fighting capital learns, thanks to London radio, about the declaration of the British government to recognize the Home Army as a veteran organization. The third point of the declaration read: “Repression of members of the Polish (Home) Army is a violation of the laws of war applicable to the Germans. In view of this, His Majesty's Government solemnly warns all Germans who participate in any way in the violation of these laws, or are in any way responsible for them, that they do so at their own risk and will be held accountable for their crimes.”
