WWII carrier landings, naval aviation history, aircraft carrier operations, WWII archival footage
Aircraft carrier landings during World War Two were among the most dangerous tasks faced by naval aviators.
Pilots had to land on a short, moving flight deck and catch one of several arresting wires stretched across the carrier deck. Even small mistakes in speed, altitude, or alignment could quickly turn a routine landing into a dangerous accident.
This video presents several archival examples of difficult and failed carrier landings captured on film during the war, including barrier crashes, unstable landings, and emergency landings caused by mechanical failure.
These historical recordings provide a rare glimpse into the challenges faced by naval aviators operating from aircraft carriers during World War Two.
