For years, mothers in labour at Mbale Regional Referral Hospital have queued for life-saving surgery on a single operating bed—serving a catchment population of about 4.5 million people across eastern Uganda. That dangerous bottleneck, blamed for delays and poor maternal and newborn outcomes, is now easing with the commissioning of a new, fully equipped maternity theatre that doubles the hospital’s surgical capacity and promises faster response to obstetric emergencies.
