In 2007, archaeologists discovered remains of a previously unknown human species, Homo luzonensis, in Callao Cave in Luzon. These remains date back about 50,000 years.
Homo luzonensis was small in stature, with unique teeth and bones suggesting a different evolutionary path from modern humans. Their discovery shocked scientists and added the Philippines to the map of important prehistoric finds.
This finding proves that the islands were home to diverse human species long before colonization, adding depth to the country’s prehistoric past.
