In 1909, the Halufax Zoo opened at Chevinedge in Siddal, Halifax.
The brain child of animal collector Alfred R McKill, who would often be seen with his camel around Salterhebble, launched the Zoo, fairground and cinema and the public turned up in their thousands to see the animals on display. However, the venture was plagued by disasters, cruelty, injury, and escapes!
The most famous escapee from the Zoo was a grizzly bear who fled into the woodland at Exley Hill and remained at large for a few hours. A pub, in Halifax centre, The Meandering Bear, is named from this incident in 1913.
In this video, I walk through the woods of the bear, look at the location of the zoo today, and discover some of the terrible events that led to its closure after just 7 years in 1916.
When I go into the woods today, will I be sure of a big surprise?
