Summary: In the kingdom of God, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
Fellowship with other believers is an integral part of the Christian walk. Each of us together shows aspects of God to those around us. We each have spiritual gifts, and when we join together, we reflect a clearer picture of God.
Consider a water molecule. It is made up of hydrogen and oxygen atoms, but water has properties that neither oxygen nor hydrogen possess. For instance, we can drink water, but not hydrogen nor oxygen. The glory of God in us is best seen when we are together.
In Romans 12:4-6, the apostle Paul uses another simple but effective simile: “For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ, we though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us.”
In the Christian community, the whole is certainly greater than the mere sum of its parts!
Regular, intentional fellowship helps us become who we are called to be in Christ. As fellowship stretches our character and faith, we learn and grow. When Christians join together in fellowship, we discover we are not just a mix of people in a room, but we learn it’s possible to experience a genuinely new dimension of community.
How do we experience God’s goodness through fellowship?
• Faith. Doing life with other believers feeds our souls. We are reminded what we believe and why we believe it. True, it is vital to spend time in private prayer, worship and God’s Word. So too, by sharing our journey with other believers, the Holy Spirit continues to teach us and those around us. We show each other how to walk with God in faith.
1 Corinthians 14:26 states it beautifully: “…When you come together, each one has a song, a teaching, a revelation, a tongue, an interpretation. All that is done must build you up.”
• Focus. When life wears you down, being with other believers lifts you and helps keep your eyes focused on Jesus. God uses other believers to give us what we need in darker times.
Hebrews 10:24-25 says, “Let us consider how to encourage one another in love and good works. Let us not neglect our meeting together, as some do, but encourage one another…”
• Foundation. Fellowship reminds us we are not alone. No matter where you are, you feel at home when you meet another believer. Christians enjoy a oneness of heart because the same Holy Spirit lives in each of us.
The first Christians “continually devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and prayer.” (Acts 2:42)
Love takes no account of its own. Christianity is not about us. The intimacy of Christian relationship flows from maturing in God’s Word and sharing in the body of Jesus Christ. Isn’t it time to start embracing the blessings of fellowship? How might you change your daily or weekly routines to make room for genuine community?
Some final tips for experiencing the fullness of Christian fellowship in your life:
• Love one another. In John 13:35, Jesus teaches our love for one another is the badge by which the world will know we follow Him. This means two or more people giving, even sacrificing, to strengthen each other. Ask yourself, “Do I love others as Jesus has loved me?”
• Share Scripture. Christian disciples regard God’s Word highly and are keen to share what they are learning with others.
• Pray with and for others. Prayer has been described as the conduit of power and resources to the front line of a battle. Intercession on behalf of one another is one of the key expressions of our fellowship with others.
For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst.
Matthew 18:20
As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.
Proverbs 27:17
