In our work with software organizations, Construx sees a common pattern in Agile transformations. Steve McConnell, author of Code Complete and CEO of Construx, discusses this pattern, which often includes this phenomenon: Pilot projects sometimes go so well, but taking the practices organization-wide leads to struggles or fails outright.
The adoption model helps to explain this observation. Below is a common pattern we see when it comes to an Agile transformation.
Step 1: Organization commits to the Agile Transformation
Step 2: Initial pilot to transform to Agile is successful
Step 3: Organization wants to expand the use of Agile
Step 4: Second or third Agile project attempted but stumbles or fails
Step 5: Agile transformation is abandoned
The specific model we use is inspired by Everett Rogers and Geoffrey Moore. For any new practice (Agile transformations included) changes start with innovators who are highly risk-tolerant. However, these innovators are not very representative of organizations at large.
The adoption of Agile travels through the change adoption model from left (innovators) to right (laggards). The different groups have very different attributes and characteristics.
The early adopters make an Agile transformation look easy, which isn’t necessarily a good thing because Agile transformations are overgeneralized from this experience.
