Key Update
Old EPF wage ceiling: ₹15,000 per month
New EPF wage ceiling: ₹25,000 per month
Effective date: 17 September 2026
Gazette Notification: S.O. 5109(E)
At 12% contribution:
₹15,000 × 12% = ₹1,800
₹25,000 × 12% = ₹3,000
Therefore, the maximum contribution based on the revised ₹25,000 ceiling would be ₹3,000 per month once fully applicable.
Important for September 2026 Payroll
Since the revised ceiling became effective from 17 September 2026, September payroll creates an important implementation question.
The practical approaches discussed are:
Pro-rata/split treatment – ₹15,000 ceiling for 1–16 September and ₹25,000 ceiling for 17–30 September.
Full-month application – applying the ₹25,000 ceiling for the entire September payroll, with the reasoning documented.
The final ECR/portal treatment should be confirmed through EPFO's operational instructions and ECR system update before filing the September 2026 return.
Who is affected?
Employees joining with wages between ₹15,001 and ₹25,000 may now fall under mandatory EPF coverage.
Existing EPF members do not automatically have their contribution treatment changed merely because the wage ceiling has increased.
Employees joining above ₹25,000 may continue to fall under the applicable excluded-employee provisions, subject to the EPF rules.
For HR & Payroll Teams
HR and payroll teams should:
✔ Identify employees earning between ₹15,001 and ₹25,000 who are not currently EPF members
✔ Review payroll configuration
✔ Monitor EPFO's operational circular and ECR update
✔ Review the September 2026 payroll treatment
✔ Reconcile any required PF contribution/arrears once official implementation instructions are available
✔ Communicate the impact on employee take-home salary where applicable
