March seventeenth, nineteen forty-three. North Atlantic, approximately five hundred eighty nautical miles west of Ireland. Kapitänleutnant Hans-Joachim Hesse stood in the control room of U-one-ninety-two, reviewing damage reports from the previous night's depth charge attack. The Type IXC submarine had survived, barely, after sixteen hours of pursuit by a British corvette. Standard procedure. The destroyer would pass overhead, drop a pattern of depth charges set for various depths, lose sonar contact in the turbulence, then spend thirty minutes reacquiring the target while U-one-ninety-two crept away on silent running.
But something had changed in the last engagement. The hydrophone operator, Oberbootsmann Friedrich Kemper, had detected unusual sounds during the final attack run. Not the familiar whoosh of depth charges tumbling through the water, their detonations predictable and survivable if you maintained depth discipline and proper evasion. These had been different. Multiple small splashes, almost simultaneous, followed by silence. Then, without warning, the ocean had erupted around them with twenty-four individual explosions occurring within a two-second window, each detonation occurring precisely at U-one-ninety-two's depth.
