Ellora caves are around 27km from Aurangabad city In Maharashtra ,India. These caves are carved in the Charanandri hills and is spread across an area of over 2 km.

All of the Ellora monuments were built during the Rashtrakuta dynasty.As per the historical records it was built by Rashtrakuta King Krishna I between the year 756 and 773 AD.It would have taken more than a hundred years to finish the temple construction

About 7000 craftsmen work over 100 years to complete this. Kailasa temple was carved out of a single rock mountain .The Biggest Temple ever carved From -Top to Bottom. about 400,000 tons of rocks were scooped out to construct this monolithic structure.

A Double storey Gopuram is located at the main entrance. On the both sides of the entrances are sculptures of gods revered by Shaivites and Vaishnavites.

The Kailash Temple is a standalone multi-storeyed west facing temple complex.

It is one of the most remarkable temples in the Ellora caves.

And sages Vyasa and Valmiki authors of Mahabharata and Ramayana seated at both sides.

This panel is representation of Gajalakshmi sitting on a lotus,there are four elephants two elephants at the top row pour water over Gajalakshmi from a pot. The two small elephants are filling pot with water

Lord Siva with eight hands stands gracefully with weight of the body placed on one leg.

Yogeshwar Shiva an eight-armed Shiva seated in padmasana at the centre on a double-petalled lotus pedestal supported by lions.

Ravana trying to lift Kailash. The upper half of the panel shows Kailash mountain, The four armed Shiva is seated in ardhaparyankasana with Parvati and his attendants.

Hindu divinities along with various mythological scenes from Hindu epics can be seen

The presence of a life-size elephant sculpture in the courtyard might have represented the strength and prosperity of Rashtrakuta kings.
There are two separate 45 feet high kirti stambh victory pillars on either side of the temple courtyard

The Kailash temple of Ellora is a place where both architectural genius and the philosophy of spiritualism coexist.

There are three storeys columned galleries with high sculpted panels.
At the bottom level nearly 152 sculptures of elephants appear to be carrying the entire weight of the main structure

The Ramayana panel smartly depiction of core incidents of Ramayana are expressed on this panel giving tribute to the opulent Ram Rajya of the Treta Yug.The Mahabharata Panel also has seven rows, scenes from the Mahabharata war and Krishna's early adventures

It is Absolutely amazing to think how this would have been carved from the top down with just a chisel and a hammer...

This is the Nandi mandapa the pavilion for Shiva’s sacred bull Nandi

This is the 16 pillar mandapa in front of the Grbhagraha .Lord Siva doing the, Tandav is curved at the ceiling of the main mandapa

inside the Garbha graha a large Sivaliga is installed

A beautiful Ganesha sculpture at the outer wall
The circumambulatory path that runs along the side of the main shrine is lined with five more auxiliary shrines each a replica of the main temple .over the garbhagriha the vimana rises 96 feet

The Kailash temple is the largest monolithic structure in the world and is one of the best wonders of the world

There is a sense of wonder about how ancient societies constructed such a marvel that is challenging to construct even today.

Ellora is a Unesco world heritage site .The management of the Ellora Caves is carried out by the Archaeological Survey of India.
