What is a Colour? Perception or Property?

Описание: Current understanding of colour and colour measurement can be traced to Newton's discovery that the colour of an isolated light is the way we perceive its overall balance of spectral components.
In this video I respond to the questions "What is a colour?" and "In what sense can colour be measured?" from the point of view of the scientific consensus embodied in the terminology of the International Lighting Vocabulary of the Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE). In doing so I look at Newton's pivotal contribution and introduce the concepts of spectral distribution, metameric colour stimuli, spectral reflectance, object colour, perceived and psychophysical colour and colour terms, tristimulus values including CIE XYZ, the CIE xy chromaticity diagram and xyY colour space, dominant wavelength, purity and the factors influencing the perceived colour of a given light or object.

This is the first of a series of videos in which my aim is to explain and illustrate current understanding of the most fundamental aspects of the science of colour, especially the basic attributes or dimensions of colour and their physical and biological basis. Subsequent titles planned are "2. Hue and its Components: 'Primary Colours'”, 3. "Three Dimensions of Colour, or More?" and 4. "Colours in Space: Classifying Colours".
