Musically, "What About Us" is as an EDM song with an upbeat dance production that blends repetitive chords, synths, and drum machine beats. Inspired by the current political state, Pink composed the track as a political protest song with poetic and inclusive lyrics. It lyrically delves into her belief that the government has failed people and depicts a message about people who feel unheard or forgotten.
