This is the very start of the Rhône River, at the Rhône Glacier. The river goes to the Mediterranean, and is the source of Lake Geneva (Lac Leman), one of the biggest lakes in Europe. It then passes through Geneva, and goes into France continuing south until it reaches the sea. In France it passes through Lyon as well as other towns.
It starts by this glacier, where a small lake of VERY cold water is formed. From there it goes into a waterfall, and down the valley (Furka Pass). So the lake you see is the very beginning of the river.
