Neyyar Dam was commissioned in 1958, making it one of the oldest multipurpose dams in Kerala. It was built not just for irrigation but also for drinking water supply to Thiruvananthapuram city. The dam and reservoir are surrounded by the Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary, so the area is part of a protected eco-sensitive zone. That’s why construction and commercial activities are very limited here.
Many people don’t know that Kottoor Elephant Rehab Centre is part of the Neyyar sanctuary system. Orphaned and injured elephants are trained here before being released back into the wild.
