The prostate gland is a small gland located just under the bladder neck which is uh useful for the fertility process in men. But as we age, some diseases can occur in this gland. And the two main diseases that can impact the gland are BPH and cancer of the prostate. These can cause enlargement of the gland, can lead to obstruction in the passing of urine and hence a slow stream. And many of these men can have frequency, urgency and a slow stream with consequential changes including urinary infections, bladder stone, or sometimes even changes in the kidneys as a consequence of their obstruction. For men who have cancer related problems, these can present uh with no symptoms at all. So could be picked up just on screening, but can also present with all the usual symptoms of the age associated prostate changes. It's critically important to differentiate these two conditions. It is important to understand that for men with age-associated prostate changes, treatment might not always be necessary. And for most of these men, it's the quality of life which is more important rather than any report. But in a small group of such men, there might be certain S changes which necessitate a decision to either treat or perform surgery. But on the other hand, for men who have cancer of the prostate, regardless of whether symptoms are there or not, most such men would require treatment. And that treatment would depend on three major factors. The type of cancer that is there, that means the precise histology, the speed at which the cancer is growing, called the grade, and the extent to which the cancer might have gone, which is called the stage. These three things are taken into account to plan treatment, which could include surgery, radiation, hormonal therapy, or other specialized treatments to take care of the cancer. Provided cancer is picked up early and treated in time, a large proportion of these men can lead a normal life with a normal lifespan. "
