The story of Penske Racing in 1989 (By Indycals.net)
In 1988 Penske Racing did something that no other team had ever done at Indianapolis - they put three cars on the front row.

They 'sort of' repeated the feat the following year. Three Penske PC18's graced the front row, but only the top two spots belonged to Penske. Rick Mears won his fifth of what would eventaully be six Indy 500 poles and Al Unser Sr. captured his fourth front row start. The third PC18 was entered by Patrick Racing and driver Emerson Fittipaldi. Penske's third driver, Danny Sullivan, who was coming off a championship season, crashed and broke his arm in practice. In a very uncharacteristic race, none of the Penske entered cars finished, but their 'car' still ended up in Victory Lane in the hands of Emerson Fittipaldi.

For the 1989 season, Patrick Racing acquired a brand new PC18 chassis made by rival team Penske Racing. The car proved to be the class of the field, sweeping the front row with Penske drivers Rick Mears and Al Unser Sr, and Patrick Racing's Emerson Fittipaldi. Emmo domintated the race and looked to be en route to an easy victory, but in the closing laps, Al Unser Jr. caught up to Fittipaldi and passed him with 5 laps to go. The two cars ran nose to tail in that order. As they started lap 199 Unser came up on some traffic which allowed Fittipaldi to set up a pass attempt on the backstretch. As the two cars approached turn three, traffic forced them to take a dangerously shallow line into turn three - Fittipaldi's car broke loose and tagged Unser Jr sending him into the wall as Fittipaldi went on to win the race. The two drivers had such a lead on third place Raul Boesel that Unser still managed to finish in 2nd place with 198 laps completed.
