The cement ball mill is a horizontal cylindrical drum supported on bearings and partially filled with steel balls of varying sizes. As clinker enters the mill through the feed chute, the rotating drum causes the steel balls to cascade and tumble, generating strong impact and shear forces. These forces crush and grind the clinker into a fine, uniform powder—typically 300–600 m²/kg in Blaine surface area.
One of the key advantages of the ball mill is its flexibility and durability. It can handle different types of clinker, gypsum, additives like limestone or slag, and even pozzolanic materials. The grinding process is controlled by adjusting factors like rotation speed, ball charge, chamber length, and separator efficiency.
Inside the mill, there are chambers separated by diaphragms, and each section can be optimized for coarse or fine grinding. Liners protect the shell from wear, while lifting plates ensure effective mixing of the clinker and grinding media. The final ground material is discharged through the outlet and sent to a separator for particle classification. Oversized particles return for further grinding, while fine cement is sent to storage or packaging.
