Painting- “In the Studio” (1881)
🎨 By Marie Bashkirtseff, a Ukrainian-born artist who lived in France.
Bashkirtseff, captures one of the most intriguing and debated scenes in 19th-century art. At first glance, it seems simple: a young woman in a white dress leans forward, pressing her lips against a painted portrait. The gesture feels romantic, almost dreamy — like she’s lost in another world.
But then you notice it. To the left of the woman, faint in the shadows, is the outline of a man’s face. He seems to be watching her. Some people believe it’s just the reflection of the woman, shown to suggest what she sees when she looks at the canvas. Others argue it’s another figure entirely — someone standing in the shadows, peering into the scene through a window or doorway.
And if that weren’t enough, look behind her. In the doorway stands an older man, the artist or teacher, quietly observing her private moment. Suddenly, the painting feels less like romance and more like a stage — full of tension, secrecy, and unanswered questions.
So what’s really going on here? Was the face intentional? Could it be paint from an earlier portrait bleeding through? Or is it simply Marie Bashkirtseff’s way of adding mystery and depth to a studio scene?
One thing’s certain: this painting is more than meets the eye.
💬 What do you think — reflection, hidden figure, or something else?
