In the 1990s, Media Play wasn’t just a store — it was an experience. With books, music, movies, video games, electronics, and more, all under one roof, it was a pop culture paradise. Founded by Trans World Entertainment, Media Play opened its first store in 1992, offering a megastore format unlike anything most shoppers had seen before.
Media Play catered to entertainment lovers who wanted to browse CDs, VHS tapes, DVDs, video games, and books all in the same trip — with aisles packed with the latest hits and cult classics. It was a hangout spot just as much as a store.
But like many big-box specialty stores, Media Play struggled to adapt to digital media and online competition. By 2006, all Media Play locations were shuttered, leaving behind memories of endless browsing and iconic blue-and-yellow signage.
