In 2009, a new South Ferry terminal platform was opened, which replaced the old loop station, as the old station could only accommodate 5 cars, and had a notable gap that required gap fillers. However, the new terminal would ironically be severely damaged in 2012, due to Hurricane Sandy, which resulted in the old loop station being re-opened once again in 2013. The old loop station would remain in use until 2017, when extensive repairs and renovations were completed, allowing the new terminal to re-open, and close the old loop station once more.
