Crostoli di carnevale (also called Chiacchiere or Frappe) are Italian fried cookies also known as Angel Wings in English due to their ribbon-like shape. Every part of Europe has a version of the Crostoli fried pastries with their own name. Sprinkled with powdered sugar, these crispy strips of deep fried sweetened dough are so light, it will be impossible to stop at just one! Usually enjoyed during Carnevale in the Veneto region of Italy just prior to Lent, crostoli can be made all year around. Enjoy!

Ingredients
4 cups of pastry or plain flour sifted
3 eggs + 2 egg yolks
80g of granulated sugar
1 pinch of salt
1 pinch of baking powder
1 lemon zested
1/3 cup of granulated sugar
40g of unsalted butter
1/3 cup of corn starch
45ml or 1.5 oz of brandy, vodka or grappa
700ml of olive oil or sunflower oil
Icing sugar for dusting
Instructions:
Mix all the ingredients together until the dough has elastic and smooth consistency. Then roll out the dough and cut into wide slices and shape them into the desired form (see the video recipe for detailed instructions). Add 700ml of oil to the frying pan and fry dough strips until golden brown. Once they cool off dust them with icing sugar.
