In January 2025, researchers at Yanshan University in China published a paper in Nature Synthesis announcing they had created a synthetic diamond with a Vickers hardness of 276 gigapascals—more than twice as hard as natural diamond, which measures between 60 and 120 gigapascals. The announcement came just 30 days after China's Ministry of Commerce issued notice 2024, number 46, banning the export of gallium, germanium, antimony, and super hard materials to the United States. While most headlines assumed the ban was about rare earth minerals, material scientists understood that super hard materials meant one thing: lab-grown diamond, the same material used to keep F-35 fighter jet radar systems from overheating and to manage the extreme heat generated by AI data center GPUs running at 700 watts per chip.
The Yanshan team achieved this record hardness using twin boundaries—mirror-image atomic structures averaging just 2.3 nanometers thick—combined with onion-like carbon precursors compressed at 25 gigapascals and over 1,000 degrees Celsius. The breakthrough circumvents the inverse Hall-Petch effect that limits conventional grain-size hardening. At the same time, a team at the University of Science and Technology Beijing produced a 5-inch diamond wafer at 208.3 gigapascals using chemical vapor deposition (CVD), while researchers at Jilin University synthesized bulk hexagonal diamond, also known as lonsdaleite, at approximately 155 gigapascals. Together these three advances point to a coordinated national campaign. Meanwhile, the United States launched the LATTIS program with Element 6 and other partners to build domestic diamond wafer capacity, but closing the gap will take years. With the global synthetic diamond market reaching 18.1 billion dollars in 2025 and China's military export ban still in force, the question of who controls the hardest materials on Earth has become central to the future of AI infrastructure, defense technology, and the next era of computing.
