You can hear the interesting call of the Northern Parula in this video. It was a windy day and i apologize for the wind noise and the nearby traffic noise also.
The Northern Parula (Setophaga americana) is a vibrant and diminutive wood warbler that graces the treetops of eastern North America. Measuring just 4.3 to 4.9 inches in length, this sparrow-sized bird is easily recognized by its blue-gray upperparts, greenish back patch, and two crisp white wing bars. Adult males sport a striking yellow throat and breast, accented by a black and chestnut band, while females and immatures are generally duller and lack the bold chest markings.
Northern Parulas are canopy dwellers, flitting energetically among branches in search of insects. Their buzzy, rising trill—often described as “zeeeee-yip”—is a hallmark of spring and summer in humid forests where Spanish moss or beard lichens hang from trees. These epiphytes are more than just scenic backdrops; they serve as nesting sites for the parula, which constructs its nest deep within the moss, rendering it nearly invisible except for the movements of the parent birds.
During migration and winter, Northern Parulas venture to the Caribbean, Central America, and parts of the southern U.S., where they adapt to a variety of habitats including farms, scrublands, and wooded areas. Though they don’t visit feeders, bird enthusiasts can support them by planting native trees and shrubs that provide shelter and foraging opportunities during their journeys.
Their presence is a subtle but enchanting part of the forest soundscape, and their reliance on specific mosses for nesting makes them sensitive indicators of forest health.
