Mike Legg, while playing for the Michigan Wolverines, became famous overnight when he seemingly magically scooped up the puck with his stick and tossed it into the net during the ESPN televised 1996 NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Tournament. The goal went a pre social media version of viral. It was replayed on cable sports channels, cable news channels, local news channels. TSN voted it “Play of the Year”. Mike Legg's stick spent time in the Hockey Hall of Fame. And the goal won a 1997 ESPY Award for “Outrageous Play of the Year.”
People started calling it "The Michigan", and hockey players of all ages, all around the world, would start learning how to do these "Michigan" goals. It caused a chain reaction that went on to cause current skill levels to go off the charts.
In the summer of 1993, 3 years before he scored the Michigan goal, and just before starting his freshman year at the University of Michigan, Mike Legg wanted to train with some high level players in his home town of London, Ontario. One of the guys he trained with was fellow London, Ontario native, and minor league pro, Bill Armstrong. Armstrong showed Legg how to do these kind of goals. Armstrong did them 8 times in the minors, and 6 of the times were before Legg did The Michigan.
