Using about 2,000 photographs taken from the International Space Station by Sophie Adenot last September 20, we created this #timelapse.

This is a nighttime flyover of the #ISS from the northwestern United States to Argentina.

The journey is accompanied almost the entire time by lightning storms (those are the dozens of flashes you see, and the distortion visible in some cases is due to the linear interpolation algorithm used to make the timelapse smoother).

The intense orange lights visible in some locations in Central America are gas flares from industrial facilities, typically used at natural gas and oil extraction or processing sites to burn off excess flammable gases produced during operations.

Before sunrise, you’ll notice the unmistakable myriad of low Earth orbit satellite reflections dancing along the horizon.
Be careful not to mistake the camera sensor's hot pixels (static bright dots that can also be seen on the Earth's surface) for actual stars, which instead move across the sky in accordance with the ISS's motion.

The video covers a 33 minutes time span and is therefore sped up about 12 times compared to the actual speed of the Station.
